Have you ever wondered about why wisdom teeth are present in your jaws? There actually are two concepts behind this; many times, people are forced to get their wisdom teeth extracted because they mess up with a person’s jaw line, or in other cases they need to be extracted due to severe pain or decay.
Different Theories behind Development of Wisdom Teeth
Earlier, people used to lose a couple of their teeth by the time they reached their twenties. This was the reason why wisdom teeth used to grow to fill the gap and make a person’s bite stronger.
Another theory says that earlier people used to have much bigger jawlines that gave enough room for wisdom teeth to grow easily. Molar sizes consistently became smaller starting from front tooth all the way to the back because of rough diet and other causes. Due to this, the other teeth slowly started moving towards the front giving space for wisdom teeth to come out. As slowly people started cooking or roasting what they ate, the amount of chewing required came down and there was less wear and tear in any tooth. Over the generations our food and eating habit changed dramatically and slowly our jaws also shrunk down, but formation of wisdom teeth continued.
Same Day Extraction of Multiple Teeth
People today have enough reasons to get their wisdom teeth extracted. Many dental offices also offer same day teeth extraction of more than one wisdom tooth if the patient is suffering from extreme pain.
Many a times, it is the dentists who suggest extraction of wisdom teeth due to various reasons. Patients can have one or more reasons to get their wisdom teeth removed. One of the common reasons given by dentists is poor alignment of teeth.
Periodontal diseases or gum diseases are other common reasons that dentists give for wisdom teeth removal. And then, there are cases when patients have one or the other kind of infection because of wisdom teeth that even cause tumours or cysts in that region. A misaligned wisdom tooth often causes decay in nearby teeth. Due to one reason or another, patients often suffer consistent discomfort or pain in their wisdom teeth, which itself becomes a big enough reason for teeth extraction.
Methods of Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Let us now see what the methods used for wisdom teeth extractions are. Broadly, there are two methods used, namely simple extraction and surgical extraction.
If your wisdom teethare still healthy and you want to get them removed before there are any complications, then a simple local anaesthetic is sufficient for extraction of the teeth.
With the help of a very thin needle, dentists inject the sedating medicine into the nearby gums. With the help of one of the simple dental instruments, the wisdom teeth are extracted.
Surgical Procedures
Surgical extraction, on other hand, is little complicated as it is done only when the wisdom teeth is completely covered by gum or bones of your jaw. Even when they are partially jammed, this very method is useful.
To begin with, local anaesthesia is given in nearby gums and after that you may be given general anaesthesia so that you are unconscious while the tooth is being surgically removed.
A small cut is made on the gum to remove the teeth from its very root.
