Making a body lotion for men or for women is really not that hard… Many people think that making your own cosmetic products is rocket science but it is actually quite simple!
The good thing about making a body lotion yourself is that you can personalize it to your preference. You can choose your favorite scent, or use particular ingredients based on your skin type: dry, oily or regular.
Another great thing about homemade cosmetics is that you know exactly what ingredients you used, so you can avoid skin irritations or allergic reactions. But, you will need a bit of creativity, which is why I prefer buying a lotion online, saves me the trouble of making it myself J
What You Will Need?
Before going on a hunt for your ingredients, it is a good idea to make a list. A list will ensure you stay on the “right path” and chose only the ingredients you want. Some of the basic ingredients are emulsifying wax, oils, fragrance and a colorant. You can get these in your local store, but if you are looking for some special ingredients, hoping over to Amazon.com is not a bad idea.
Also, you will need some containers for preparation, mixing and storing. Make sure you wash these thoroughly to prevent any contamination…
Making Your Body Lotion – Step-By-Step Process
As I`ve already stated, making a body lotion yourself is fairly easy when you know all the steps and have a good recipe. Here are the basic steps:
- First – mix in the oils you`ve chosen, water and the emulsifying wax. Naturally, the water and oil will not mix well (or at all), which is why you need this wax.
- Second –Adding the essential oils and fragrance. The first step was the basis of your product, and the second one is where the fun starts. Choosing the oils and fragrances will really depend on you and your own preference. Of course, there are a number of recipes online you can choose from, so this is another route you can take; it`s really up to you!
- Third –adding colorant. This is an optional step because it is not vital that you add color to your body lotion. It is advised, however, to add color if you are giving it away as a gift or planning on selling your products. The appearance is an important aspect of selling and marketing your products so adding a color seems like a good idea in this particular situation.
- Fourth – fourth and final step is bottling your lotion and getting it ready for usage/storage. Generally, you will want to avoid plastic jars or tubes, glass is my preferred choice; also, it is a good idea to add a pump which will allow you to squirt the lotion, this will make your lotion convenient and will add to its value when selling! Labeling is another (optional) step that can really add credibility and appeal to your product, as well as inform your users on the ingredients you used.
Using Your Homemade Lotions
Once you`ve made your first lotion you will, of course, be proud of yourself and continue to use it until your jar is empty. What I would advise you, after the body lotion runs out, is to try a different recipe.
What I like to do is keep at least 3-4 different recipes at hand so I can compare each lotion and see which suits my skin the best!
