Lasik Eye Surgery: What You Should Know

Laser vision correction, colloquially referred to as LASIK, is a form of laser eye surgery. It is a type of refractive surgery that is performed on people who need such corrective procedures in order to treat conditions like hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism.

LASIK surgery is typically performed by a highly skilled ophthalmologist who uses a concentrated laser beam or a microkeratome to effectively reshape the human eye’s cornea in order to significantly improve visual acuity. These days, such laser eye surgery is performed on people who want a long-lasting alternative to constantly wearing spectacles or even contact lenses, for that matter.

o   Just what is LASIK all about?

For anyone to have clear vision, it is imperative that the eye’s lens and cornea should bend or refract the light rays hitting the eye properly enough. This will allow any and all images to be focused on the retina itself. If that does not happen, it can potentially lead to the blurring of the images that hit the eye ball.

This blurriness is generally referred to as a sort of “refractive error.” It is typically caused by a steadily increasing difference between the shape of the cornea, i.e. its curvature and the overall length of the eye.

As a general rule, “LASIK” uses a concentrated “excimer laser” that is an invisible ultraviolet laser to remove every thin layer of corneal tissue from the eye. This essentially gives the cornea a wholly new shape entirely, so that the light rays are also focused more clearly on the retina itself. In simple words, LASIK causes the cornea to become noticeably thinner.

This is an entirely outpatient surgical procedure. The whole process, from start to finish, barely lasts 10 to 15 minutes at most for each eye. The only anesthetic that is commonly used would be externally administered eye drops that act to numb the main surface of the eye. The procedure does not require general anesthesia, so the patient is awake and alert throughout the short time duration while LASIK surgery is being performed.

o   What happens during Lasik surgery?

In order to effectively conduct the procedure, a flap of corneal tissue has to be created. The eye surgeon then proceeds to peel back this flap so that the laser can get to work to reshape the corneal tissue located underneath. Personal Eyes Lasik Surgery are the right people for the job at hand, due to their extensive experience and expertise in this field.

If you suffer from short sightedness (myopia) or any other similar disorder, then such corrective surgery might be the answer to getting rid of your ungainly specs or even contact lenses. It is an almost painless as well as stress-free procedure and does not require any extensive stay at the hospital with heavily bandaged eyes.
